NEW YORK (UPI) -- Aviation officials say crews are searching the Hudson River in New York City for both engines of the US Airways A320 jetliner that came down in the river.

The engines, which are critical pieces of evidence for investigators, apparently were stripped off on impact when the pilots of Flight 1549 ditched the aircraft in the river Thursday afternoon shortly after takeoff from La Guardia Airport, The New York Times reported Saturday.

None of the 150 passengers or five crew members were killed in the ditching.

One of the plane's pilots reported "a double bird strike" shortly after takeoff, and investigators told the Times that the engines' inner structures should be able to surrender enough DNA information to figure out not only whether it was birds that disabled both engines, but also what species of bird.

Officials planned Saturday to interview Flight 1549's pilot, Chesley B. "Sully" Sullenberger III, and his co-pilot, Jeffrey Skiles. National Transportation Safety Board member Kathryn Higgins told the newspaper that investigators would not attempt to fish out the plane's flight data recorder while the plane was submerged in the Hudson, saying the diving conditions were so bad in river that they would instead wait until the plane was removed from the waterway.
