Here is a video of a house fire from Regentville, Australia. Interesting watching the fires behavior from the changes of the progression of the fire. From the initial smoke colors and movement, the rollover, and the changes to the direction of the flames as the fire finally goes thought the roof and self vents. Surprise as to how long the front windows stay in. Good TRAINING TOOL.

MARSEILLES — A juvenile was charged with arson and burglary Friday after an investigation into a massive fire that started around 2 p.m. and destroyed an old foundry and two other buildings in Marseilles. The six-alarm fire knocked out power through most of town. Full Story HERE at News Tribune

Landmark Residential Fire Study Shows How Crew Sizes and Arrival

Times Influence Saving Lives and Property

A landmark study issued today by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and research collaborators including CFAI-Risk, the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF), and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), shows that the size of firefighting crews has a substantial effect on the fire service’s ability to protect lives and property in residential fires.

The study included more than 60 controlled fire experiments to determine the impact of crew size, first-due engine arrival time and subsequent apparatus arrival times on firefighter safety and effectiveness at a low-hazard residential structure fire.

The results of the field experiments apply only to fires in low-hazard residential structures as described in the NFPA Standard 1710, but it provides a strong starting point,” said Dr. Lori Moore-Merrell, Assistant to the General President, IAFF.

Primary findings of the experiments indicated that the following factors had the most significant impact on the success of fire fighting operations:

Overall Scene Time: The four-person firefighting crews were able to complete 22 essential firefighting and rescue tasks in a typical residential structure 30 percent faster than two-person crews and 25 percent faster than three-person crews.

Time to Water on Fire: The four-person crews were able to deliver water to a similar-sized fire 15 percent faster than the two-person crews and 6 percent faster than three-person crews, steps that help to reduce property damage and lower danger to the firefighters.

Ground Ladders and Ventilation: The four-person crews completed laddering and ventilation (for life safety and rescue) 30% faster than the two-person crews and 25% faster than the three-person crews.

Primary Search: The four-person crews completed a primary search and rescue 30 percent faster than two-person crews and 5 percent faster than three-person crews.

Occupant Rescue: Three different “standard” fires were simulated using NIST’s Fire Dynamic Simulator to examine how the interior conditions change for trapped occupants and the firefighters if the fire develops more slowly or more rapidly than observed in the actual experiments. The fire modeling simulations demonstrated that two-person, late-arriving crews can face a fire that is twice the intensity of the fire faced by fire-person, early arriving crews. Additionally, the modeling demonstrated that trapped occupants receive less exposure to toxic combustion products, such as carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, if the firefighters arrive earlier and involve three or more persons per crew.

“The results of this study will be especially useful to the many fire departments across the nation that are challenged by budget crises, rising call volume, personnel and equipment shortages, security issues and an overall expectation to do more with less” said CFAI-Risk and CPSE, Inc., President Chief Randy R. Bruegman. President Bruegman was a featured speaker at the press briefing. Click here to view his comments.

This study was funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

The next step for the research team is to develop a training package for firefighters and public officials that would enable them to have both quantitative and qualitative understanding of the research. This project is also being funding by FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program.

Rescue from apartment building fire in Milford, Massachusetts

Some pretty good shots, fire went from offensive to defensive with evacuation signal given. Always love it when a pet is also saved as well as the occupants! Not sure but looks as it this may have been a balloon frame construction type,  fire on first floor quickly spreads to the upper areas?

From You Tube site  metrowestvideos A fire destroyed a three-story home at 31 Pine St. in Milford the afternoon of 3/25/10. A tenant, Gary Howe, had to be rescued from the third floor by a ladder truck. Two cats were also safely rescued

And another one here, remember there are more and more video capture devices out there. You are always on camera.

From sparkywfd  Around 1pm, March 25, 2010 firefighters were called to this Pine St. apartment complex for a fire. Upon arrival, heavy smoke was showing and an occupant was hanging out the window on the 3rd floor.
Heavy fire was on the 1st floor rapidly extending to the upper floors. Firefighters made the rescue and attempted an aggressive interior attack but the fire was way ahead of them. Firefighters eventually had to be pulled out and fight the blaze from the exterior.
It took almost 2 hours to bring this 3 alarm fire under control.

Aluminum can also fail when exposed to heat, as least with wood you can see how much of it has burned away. Close call here for two FF’s, ladder was placed upwind of the the window but the fire grew fast and still reached the ladder. Two lucky FF’s on the roof made a hasty retreat when conditions worsened at the this structure fire.  Video from Flashover TV

Interesting - Backdraft caught on tape

As posted to You tube - A Baltimore fire official says five firefighters were injured battling a blaze at a row house.
MD Baltimore N. East Ave Fire Department spokesman Chief Kevin Cartwright says when firefighters arrived at the row house on North East Avenue around 6 a.m. Friday they found heavy smoke and fire coming from the basement spreading to the first floor.
Cartwright says one firefighter suffered a first-degree burn and may have fractured his arm. He was taken to Bayview Burn Center, where he is listed in stable condition.
Four more firefighters with less serious injuries were taken to other hospitals and are also in stable condition.
Cartwright says it took about a half hour to control the blaze and the cause is under investigation. He says its not yet clear whether anyone was home when the fire broke out.

Ventilation – It goes where you let it

Posted to YouTube December 15, 2009 A more coordinated operation should have prevented this. This is a video of a structure fire in which a firefighter vented purportedly on their own which led to a room flashing with firefighters still inside the structure. Would make a good video of how not to do it for training. Pretty dramatic footage with example of what happen when the fire get a good foothold and then oxygen. I have no info on whether the FF inside were injured.

Another House explosion Video

Here is another house explosion video posted on You Tube on the 27th -  I have seen my share of these types of incidents both natural gas and propane. Sometime they catch fire and some time they don’t. This time the structure caught. Bushnell is south west of Peoria Illinois. You will have to watch the video on You Tube the embed video below has been disabled.

Here is the write up on You Tube: The home at 519 Washington St. was leveled by a gas explosion around 2:30 p.m. The blast was heard little over seven miles away and also caught one other house on fire, leaving a large crater in the roof. It was not known if those occupants were home when the fire started.
No injuries were reported, but an ambulance was called for a firefighter reportedly having chest pains.
The occupant of the house Bradl Thompson, was outside with his dogs at the time. His wife was believed to be at work at the time.
Houses on the gas line and sewer system were also evacuated as well as those at least one block away on either side according to Bushnell Police Chief Merv Hilliard. At about 6:30 p.m. police said residents were being allowed back into their homes.
Firefighters from Macomb, Emmet-Chalmers, Good Hope and Adair fire departments were called in to help the Bushnell-Prairie City Fire Department battle the two fires.  You Tube

Found this on Best firefighter video You could always count on a senario like this in tactics & strategy class. This is a good what would you do? Actually I had a simulation program for this type of incident. The Chicago fire department responded to this strip mall fire on Oct. 1st . There were no injuries reported in the blaze, which reportedly began at a furniture store in the mall at 3952 W. Cermak Road at about 6:45 a.m. The flames were able to spread to other businesses in the mall, including a Dollar Store and a restaurant on the western portion of the mall. The blaze was put out by 8:10 a.m.

On scene fire video, what mistakes do you see?

Indiana house fire: From Lake Station yesterday morning. Here's the write-up with this video- Crews were dispatched to a reported house fire at 3804 East 36th Ave just after 10am on 8-27-09, police had all residents evacuated before fire personnel arrived on scene. After a line was advanced in the front door it was determined that the easiest way to access the fire was through the roof. Two lines were used from the roof vantage point and the fire was brought under control with no injuries. Fire investigators have determined the fire started due to an electrical problem.

Basement fire, side C of structure. Dispatched as possibly occupied. No one was home at the time.

Good First Arrival Video, What would you do different on this one ???

This video show on arrival, would make a good T&S class video. Watch the time ticker on how long it takes for the crew to get a line on the fire. Priorities could change if the time of day was different?, Looks as if everyone was out on arrival. Good old deep seated attic fire? Notice that they break the upper floor windows and no smoke shows?

On August 20, 2009, at 1:27pm, calls came pouring into the Harford County Fire Dispatch Center reporting a house on fire in the 600 block of Angel Drive, which is located in the Long Bar Harbor area of Abingdon, Harford County. The first arriving fire engine, which was from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, arrived at 1:36pm. They used their hose lines to begin extinguishing the fire. A hook and ladder truck from the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, as well as other units from the Abingdon Volunteer Fire Company, Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company (Baltimore Co), and Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire Department also responded and assisted with extinguishment. There were no reported injuries and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Remember what the citizen see and perceives

This fire was from a month ago in the 800 block of East 22nd Street Baltimore . There is some interesting narration and a couple captions from the photographer. Remember the citizen have a preconceived perception and expectations of the things that the fire service does.

7/10/09 Box Alarm 33-10 800 E. 22nd St
E33, E6, E23, E51, E21, T5, T1, M16, BC2, BC6 (WF E31, T15, AF2, EMS3, SO2, M7)
At 1631 hrs units were dispatched to the above address for a dwelling fire. E33 and T5 went onscene with a 2 story eog row, with heavy fire showing from the second floor. BC2 arrived and immediately called for a working fire. Truck 5 threw ladders, ventilated and conducted a search, while Engine 33 knocked down a bulk of the fire on second floor. Good job by all companies preventing the fire from extending into exposures. Medic 16 transported one civilian patient suffering from smoke inhalation. After investigation and overhaul. All units returned to service in 2 hrs.
